• One Earth Sangha: A Buddhist Response to Climate Change

  A group of Insight meditation practitioners in the Washington, D.C. area are creating a new sangha in response to the growing threat of climate change. Our mission is to create a community of teachers and practitioners to support one another in awakening and responding to this and other threats to our shared home.

  In September IMCW opened the Center for Mindful Living, a space in the Washington metro area dedicated to Buddhist teachings, the practice of meditation, and the exploration of the many ways we can bring deeper presence and awareness into our lives.

• Bhante Rahula, Guest Speaker in Arlington on Monday Night

  We are privileged to have Bhante Rahula as our guest speaker at the Arlington class this Monday night. Bhante Rahula was born in Southern California in 1948 and was ordained as a novice Buddhist monk in 1975 in Sri Lanka. He received his higher ordination (Upasampada) at Wat Thai Los Angeles in 1979. Living at the Bhavana Society Forest Monastery in West Virginia from 1986 until 2010, he was a senior teacher and was instrumental in designing and building the new meditation building at Bhavana....

  IMCW would like to announce that teachers Trudy mitchell-gilkey and La Sarmiento, and affiliate teachers Mary Aubry, Alicia Bazan-Jimenez and Larissa Kitenko graduated in September 2012 from the CDL program sponsored by Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, CA. The 2-year CDL program seeks to train "leaders who are ethical, who understand the principles of dharma practice and who can elicit clarity, kindness and patience within their community."

  A small and growing group begins their day each weekday morning in June with a period of meditation at IMCW’s beautiful new, metro-accessible meeting space in Tenleytown. On Tuesdays and Fridays, people drop by to meditate anytime between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

  Building on this initial step, IMCW’s board voted this month to rent a larger space in the same building. This step will allow our community to host regular meditation classes for 30-40 people, as well as a variety of other classes—mindful yoga, qigong, mindfulness-based stress reduction...
