GOOD WORKS

Mission and Overview

The mission of the GOOD WORKS program is to promote the dharmic principle of generosity. We will do this by cultivating and promoting opportunities for generosity and service in the greater Washington DC area and in the rest of the world.

As part of this mission, we intend to raise the level of awareness within our IMCW community about the benefits that generosity brings each of us in our own practice.  We will focus on what the Buddha said about generosity being one of the central pillars of a spiritual life. We want to show how, in the act of giving, we develop our ability to let go, we cultivate a spirit of caring, and we acknowledge the inter-connectedness that we all share.

How It Works

The IMCW GOOD WORKS program will be volunteer-driven, with staff providing a small amount of logistical support.

The program will include these components:

• Ongoing support for a few charitable organizations for which there are one or more volunteer “champions,” and which have the need for assistance from IMCW. Ideally, the organization would have opportunities for short and long-term commitments, a structure that can train and manage volunteers, and tasks that would appeal to a wide range of interests and abilities.

This support initially consists of encouraging members of the IMCW community to volunteer their time.  Support is also available in the form of small grants which may be applied for through the GOOD WORKS committee.

• Episodic support for organizations that can use volunteers for a short project that may last a day, an afternoon, or any other particular length of time.

GOOD WORKS will function primarily with the aid and dedication of its “champions.”  A “champion” acts as the rallying point for people from IMCW.  She or he identifies the need and organizes participation by IMCW members.

• Continuing support for IMCW members who participate in the GOOD WORKS program.  We will be asking volunteers if they want to participate in a monthly or quarterly meeting to continue the discussion of generosity, and to share how participation in GOOD WORKS has affected their practice.

• Other ways to raise consciousness about the spiritual effects of generosity.  For instance, this might include periodic workshops, day-longs or dharma talks that would promote insight about the value of generosity in our spiritual life.
