Daylong: Cultivating Mindfulness as a Path to Habit Change

We all have habits we’d like to change and habits we’d like to develop to live more happily and fully. But once ingrained, behaviors can be very hard to break because of the brain processes involved in habit formation.
Join IMCW guiding teacher Hugh Byrne, PhD, and learn how to use to mindfulness skills and practices to bring habitual behaviors and thought patterns into awareness, where they can be transformed.
Emphasizing kindness, self-compassion, non-judgment, and moment-to-moment awareness, you will cultivate formal and informal skills and practices to help you free yourself from unhealthy habits. You will empower yourself to shift your life through:
- mindfulness of breath and body, including sitting and walking meditation to connect with your deepest intentions and discover what you care about most deeply.
- loving-kindness and self-compassion practices to help you “ride the waves” and work with difficult feelings, bodily sensations, and challenging emotions.
- mindful eating and guided reflections to identify unhelpful habits to let go of and beneficial ones to develop.
- work skillfully with your thoughts to shift your focus from narrating to fully experiencing your life.
Through talks on daily life skills and practices, question-and-answer sessions, journaling, and sharing in pairs and groups, you will learn how to work with habits before, during, and after they manifest. You will take home powerful skills, practices to bring mindfulness—a key to habit change—into your daily life.

IMCW Retreats and Workshops
IMCW retreats and workshops offer instruction in Buddhist meditation and talks on the awakening of our natural insight, love and wisdom. While the meditation practices derive from the Buddhist tradition, they are universal in orientation and address spiritual themes of concern to all contemplative traditions.
A workshop is not primarily silent (talking may be allowed during breaks and lunch) and may be focused on a special topic, such as applying meditation to relationships, emotional healing or physical well-being. Workshops may include a variety of formats, including different reflections and exercises and the sharing of experiences.

Fees: Base $75, Mid $85, Sponsor $95
The base offering covers direct expenses for this event, including support for the teacher. Your payment at the two higher levels includes a tax-deductible donation to the Insight Meditation Community of Washington (IMCW).
Scholarships: Scholarships are available. To apply, please click the "Contact Us" button below before registering. You can also direct a donation to the scholarship fund on the registration form. Please apply early as funds are limited.
IMCW Refund Policy: $35 of the registration fee is non-refundable. If you contact the retreat manager by clicking the "Contact Us" button below three weeks before the event, the balance of your registration will be refunded. Issuing a refund check may take 2-4 weeks. If you cancel less than three weeks before your retreat begins, your full payment is forfeited.
