Waking Up From Patriarchy: A Retreat for Women

Please join teachers Mary VanDevanter, Shell Fischer, and Carolyn Stachowski for a day dedicated to exploring the causes and conditions of patriarchy.

Together, in a loving and safe container, we’ll take time to unpack our particular stories, then put them in the proper context of our patriarchal cultural conditioning using the simple but powerful tool of our awareness. We’ll also fearlessly take a look at the subtle--and not so subtle--messages and dynamics that keep this conditioning in place, and explore how the Buddhist practices can be tools of self-liberation. Finally, we’ll spend time setting our intentions about how we can move forward, using wise thought, speech, and action.

With Awareness, We Are Empowered

We’ll be gathering for our retreat on Saturday from 10 a.m.–5 p.m in the historic Langley Hill Friends Meeting Hall, 6410 Georgetown Pike, McLean, VA, set near the peaceful surrounds of Dogue Hill Road and Georgetown Pike.

Once you’ve registered, you’ll receive more information and suggestions from Shell.

This venue is handicapped accessible.

There is parking in the rear of the meeting house and in the adjacent lot at the Country Day School, street parking on Dogue Hill Lane.

IMCW Retreats and Workshops

IMCW retreats and workshops offer instruction in Buddhist meditation and talks on the awakening of our natural insight, love and wisdom. While the meditation practices derive from the Buddhist tradition, they are universal in orientation and address spiritual themes of concern to all contemplative traditions.

A workshop is not primarily silent (talking may be allowed during breaks and lunch) and may be focused on a special topic, such as applying meditation to relationships, emotional healing or physical well-being. Workshops may include a variety of formats, including different reflections and exercises and the sharing of experiences.
