Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation

Sundays, September 10-December 17

(No class November 26.)

Join us for an in-depth introduction to the basic “how-to’s” of mindfulness meditation. Each month we will explore one of the “foundations” of mindfulness practice originally taught by the Buddha but now offered in a variety of settings, including medical centers, schools, and businesses.

The cultivation and practice of mindfulness has been shown through extensive research to reduce stress, chronic pain, and various forms of emotional suffering, as well as increasing compassion and a deep sense of well being. Mindfulness practice begins with anchoring ourselves in our immediate present moment experience by cultivating the “felt sense” of physical sensations. As this deepens we begin to be able to explore the typical conditioned emotions and thoughts that also arise in the present moment and, through mindfulness, begin to understand and shift our relationship to them and become free of the suffering they might cause.

Our four session leaders draw from a combined extensive background in both Buddhist and modern therapeutic approaches to mindfulness, such as mindfulness based cognitive therapy. Our extended format allows participants to receive feedback over time that allows their mindfulness practice to truly take root as a sustainable way of promoting a deepening sense of inner peace.
