The IMCW Family Program invites you to join our 4th annual Family Retreat. This summer retreat is our favorite event of the year! Gift your family quality time together to relax and reconnect in supportive community amidst the beautiful Shenandoah foothills.
The retreat is open to parents, grandparents, and guardians with children age 5 to 13 interested in cultivating deeper presence, joy, resilience, and connection in everyday family life.
Teens age 14-20 may apply to serve as assistant mindful leaders (MLs) and can earn community service hours while gaining valuable leadership and teaching experience. Assistant MLs will spend time with their families, a portion of each day assisting our experienced adult MLs with children break-out groups, and time with peers. Teens under the age of 18 must attend along with a registered adult.
Both beginning and experienced mindfulness practitioners are welcome. The retreat balances engaged activities with free time. There will be time for collective family practice as well as time for parents and children to break-out into groups and engage with peers. During break-outs, children are divided by age and there will be a separate tween program. Adults will have opportunities to practice meditation together and engage in facilitated adult discussion groups.
Dharma activities include skits, games, songs, art, mindful movement, nature activities, a campfire, meditation, and dharma talks. During free time, optional activities may include mindful sports, drumming, nature activities, Qi Gong, and parent workshops.
Please arrive between 4-6 p.m. on Thursday for check-in, followed by dinner from 6-7 p.m., orientation and the opening ceremony at 7:45 p.m. The retreat ends Sunday at 12:30 p.m. followed by lunch.
Teacher biographies can be found on the Teachers webpage.
Retreat manager: Bonnie Riley
"This retreat is a rare opportunity to unplug from our tech-saturated lives and connect with what is true in our family relationships... This is one of the few retreats available in the country focused on families with school-age kids.”
~ The Fagan-Smith family
“Exactly what I needed… remarkably engaging for kids... poetry in motion.”
“The teachers are incredible. They made the dharma so accessible to children. And their own presence, honesty, vulnerability, & heart is what made this retreat so good. They create and hold the space for us all."
"We were surprised at how much we connected as a family ... My daughter, who is 8, asked when it was over, 'can we go again next year?'."
“The whole retreat was such an enriching experience. The teachers were the best part! Each brings his and her own gifts & unique style that has a profound impact on teaching how to apply mindfulness to everyday life.“
