Sutta Study Group

Sutta Study Group Catherine Brousseau Private Residence, Silver Spring, MD

Catherine Brousseau

7/3/2018 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM at Private Residence, Silver Spring, MD,) (Map It)

This group meets the second Tuesday evening of each month to explore the original discourses (suttas) of the Buddha. The Pali Canon, which is the collection of Buddhist scripture, contains a wealth of material on many different aspects of the spiritual path, from the practical to the profound, and can provide context, guidance and inspiration. Study group discussion is relaxed and informal, with an emphasis on finding the relevance of the ancient teachings for our own lives and spiritual practice.

The group reads the evening’s selected sutta aloud, each taking turn to read portions of the text.  People are free to pause and comment, invite feedback, or ask questions.  Though we focus on a common translation, consulting other translations adds texture to our study.  Currently we are reading from the anthology, The Buddha’s Teachings on Social and Communal Harmony by Bhikkhu Bodhi.

Read, "Suttas: Digging for Treasure", by Catherine Brousseau, originally published in the ENews, June 2010.

Participants are expected to have an ongoing meditation practice to serve as a foundation for study. It's not necessary to have had any previous study of the suttas to join a group, just a healthy interest and willingness to learn.

If you have an established meditation practice and would like to discuss the possibility of joining the Sutta Study group, please contact Catherine Brousseau.
