Teaching from the Heart: A Day of Mindfulness for Educators

Ofosu Jones-Quartey Seekers Church

Ofosu Jones-Quartey

10/27/2018 9:30 AM 4:00 PM  at  Seekers Church, (276 Carroll Street, NW, Takoma Park, Washington DC, 20012) (Map It)

There is widespread agreement now that of all factors inside the school that affect children’s learning and achievement, the most important is the teacher—not standards, assessments, resources or even the schools’ leadership, but the quality of the teacher. Teachers really matter.

~ Andy Hargreaves and Michael Fullan, 5 Dimensions of Engaged Teaching

In this daylong for educators we will learn and practice tools for taking good care of ourselves, so that we can be truly present for those we teach, and bring the best of ourselves into the classroom. We will slow down and come home to our body and breath by practicing mindful sitting, walking and eating silently together, as well as deep relaxation, a mindfulness talk, and group discussion. We will at times use music and sound as tools and guides in our mindfulness practice.

We can’t transmit mindfulness in our work as educators if we don’t embody it ourselves. Therefore the focus of our day will be on nourishing ourselves as educators, yet we will also explore secular mindfulness practices and exercises we can share with our students.

The unwritten curriculum in the classroom is the teacher's presence.

~ Meena Srinivasan, author of Teach, Breathe, Learn

The focus of the day is on secular applications of mindfulness and is therefore appropriate for educators of all faith traditions or none.

Whether you are a teacher, school counselor, administrator, or simply have an interest in mindfulness in education — all are welcome.

Seekers' Church is conveniently located across the street from the Takoma Metro Station.

The building is fully accessible, with a ramp off the back parking lot and an elevator inside.

IMCW retreats and workshops offer instruction in Buddhist meditation and talks on the awakening of our natural insight, love and wisdom. While the meditation practices derive from the Buddhist tradition, they are universal in orientation and address spiritual themes of concern to all contemplative traditions.

A workshop is not primarily silent (talking may be allowed during breaks and lunch) and may be focused on a special topic, such as applying meditation to relationships, emotional healing or physical well-being. Workshops may include a variety of formats, including different reflections and exercises and the sharing of experiences.
