Cultivating a Mindful and Heartful Response to the Climate Crisis

Walk-ins are welcome to this retreat.

Does news of the growing climate crisis and loss of nature bring up feelings of fear, rage, or despair? Do the strange weather events send you off to the nearest Netflix binge or other compelling distraction? Climate change and related ecological crises arguably present an unprecedented psychological and emotional challenge. Yet there is no suffering that our mindfulness practice cannot meet, from the heart’s smallest jealousy to global climate change and the pervasive degradation of nature.

In recognition of Earth Day, join Eco-Dharma teachers Kristin Barker and Amy Smith for a compassionate, mindful holding of ecological crises. We’ll explore some of what that the Buddhist wisdom tradition has to offer to this moment. In the context of mindful community, we’ll engage in the practices that can discover and nourish the seeds of a robust, steady and deeply meaningful response to climate change, and deepen our connection with the preciousness of this interdependent life.

Weather permitting, we will be doing some sitting and walking practice outdoors.

This venue is not accessible for those with mobility impairments.

IMCW retreats and workshops offer instruction in Buddhist meditation and talks on the awakening of our natural insight, love and wisdom. While the meditation practices derive from the Buddhist tradition, they are universal in orientation and address spiritual themes of concern to all contemplative traditions.

A workshop is not primarily silent (talking may be allowed during breaks and lunch) and may be focused on a special topic, such as applying meditation to relationships, emotional healing or physical well-being. Workshops may include a variety of formats, including different reflections and exercises and the sharing of experiences.
