The Freedom of Self-Forgiveness

Shell Fischer Unitarian Universalist Church of the Shenandoah Valley

Shell Fischer

4/4/2020 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM  at  Unitarian Universalist Church of the Shenandoah Valley (6380 Valley Pike, Stephens City, VA, 22655) (Map It)

“Often, our first instinct is to protect our wounds by armoring ourselves with hatred and blame. Forgiveness, which allows us to let go of this armor, becomes possible as we bring a full, compassionate presence to our underlying vulnerability. Such presence loosens our identification with the thoughts and feelings of anger, and uncovers a heart space that is naturally open, inclusive, and warm.”

~ Tara Brach

During this daylong meditation retreat, we’ll be using practices of mindfulness to help loosen old habits of shame and self-blame that we use to armor our hearts, and limit our experience of joy.

As we practice, we will begin to sense and recognize the innate goodness, presence, and well-being that lies beneath these sometimes ancient, painful judgments of ourselves, and discover the expansive freedom that comes with offering our heart the forgiveness it has been seeking.

The format will include both guided and silent meditation, a dharma talk, and walking meditation both inside the sanctuary, and outside on the beautiful grounds. The silence will end at 4:30 p.m., and we’ll finish with a half-hour dedicated to questions.

Once you’ve registered, you’ll receive more information and suggestions from Shell.

IMCW retreats and workshops offer instruction in Buddhist meditation and talks on the awakening of our natural insight, love and wisdom. While the meditation practices derive from the Buddhist tradition, they are universal in orientation and address spiritual themes of concern to all contemplative traditions.

A workshop is not primarily silent (talking may be allowed during breaks and lunch) and may be focused on a special topic, such as applying meditation to relationships, emotional healing or physical well-being. Workshops may include a variety of formats, including different reflections and exercises and the sharing of experiences.
