Real Change: Mindfulness To Heal Ourselves and the World

Sharon Salzberg Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Rockville

Sharon Salzberg

6/20/2020 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM  at  Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Rockville (100 Welsh Park Drive, Rockville, MD, 20850) (Map It)

In today's fractured world, even when we have the willingness to look at suffering, we often feel overwhelmed, may end up frozen in our tracks, and feel that we can't do anything. In this daylong we will explore tools of meditation, not as a replacement for action, but as a way to practice generosity with ourselves and reconnect to a sense of life that's bigger than immediate circumstances. We will look at the journey from empathy to compassion, anger to courage, and grief to resilience in trying to make a difference.

Real Change (book cover), by Sharon SalzbergWhether you're working on resolving conflicts with a neighbor, caregiving an aging parent, registering voters, or trying to combat global warming, the fundamental principles and practices of mindfulness and lovingkindness can lead to greater clarity and confidence, which helps us find more balance and joy as we take each next step into a better world.

The day will consist of talks, meditation practice, and Q & A. Suitable for both beginning and more experienced meditators.

Sharon's new book, Real Change, will be available for sale and signing afterwards.

IMCW retreats and workshops offer instruction in Buddhist meditation and talks on the awakening of our natural insight, love and wisdom. While the meditation practices derive from the Buddhist tradition, they are universal in orientation and address spiritual themes of concern to all contemplative traditions.

A workshop is not primarily silent (talking may be allowed during breaks and lunch) and may be focused on a special topic, such as applying meditation to relationships, emotional healing or physical well-being. Workshops may include a variety of formats, including different reflections and exercises and the sharing of experiences.
