This special introductory class is being offered for anyone interested in learning more about the upcoming 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction workshops. Our next 8-week MBSR course begins on June 25.

In this introductory class you will learn about some of the principles of mindfulness, explore how mindfulness might assist in stress reduction, and practice both formal and informal mindfulness meditation.

IMCW's Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an eight-week program in the Washington, DC area that assists people who want to learn to use their own internal resources to respond more skillfully to stress, medical and psychological conditions, and promote healthy living.

The classes are modeled after the ones offered at the Stress Reduction Clinic developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. This 30-year-old program is highly respected in the medical community, and has been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show, NBC’s Dateline, ABC’s Evening News, and hundreds of newspapers and magazine articles. In February 2014 it was featured on the cover of Time Magazine.

This course is suitable for both beginning meditators (no meditation experience required) and for experienced meditators looking to deepen their practice and understanding of mindfulness.

The course schedule consists of eight weekly classes and one day-long workshop. This highly participatory, practical course includes:

  • Guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practices
  • Gentle stretching and mindful yoga
  • Group dialogue and discussions aimed at enhancing awareness in everyday life
  • Daily home practice, including guided meditations
  • Six meditation practice CDs (also available in mp3 format) and a home practice manual

Because this is an online event, participants are encouraged to find space of relative quiet, limiting the amount of interaction with others in the environment as much as possible. Participants may join by internet or via phone. A PowerPoint presentation will be included, so it will be helpful to join via internet rather than by phone call, if possible.

Registration is required in order to receive the URL needed to join the session. Meeting ID info will be sent via email a few days before the event.
