This special introductory class is being offered for anyone interested in learning more about the upcoming 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction workshops. Our next 8-week MBSR course begins on June 25.
In this introductory class you will learn about some of the principles of mindfulness, explore how mindfulness might assist in stress reduction, and practice both formal and informal mindfulness meditation.
IMCW's Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an eight-week program in the Washington, DC area that assists people who want to learn to use their own internal resources to respond more skillfully to stress, medical and psychological conditions, and promote healthy living.
The classes are modeled after the ones offered at the Stress Reduction Clinic developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. This 30-year-old program is highly respected in the medical community, and has been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show, NBC’s Dateline, ABC’s Evening News, and hundreds of newspapers and magazine articles. In February 2014 it was featured on the cover of Time Magazine.
This course is suitable for both beginning meditators (no meditation experience required) and for experienced meditators looking to deepen their practice and understanding of mindfulness.
The course schedule consists of eight weekly classes and one day-long workshop. This highly participatory, practical course includes:
- Guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practices
- Gentle stretching and mindful yoga
- Group dialogue and discussions aimed at enhancing awareness in everyday life
- Daily home practice, including guided meditations
- Six meditation practice CDs (also available in mp3 format) and a home practice manual
Participants attending the class should bring comfortable clothing, layers for adjusting to the temperature, and pillows for comfort. Chairs, meditation cushions, yoga mats and blankets will be provided.
I have been able to apply and integrate the learning from the class in my day-to-day life. It has brought a sense of calm, peace, and kindness that gives me the confidence of dealing with life’s challenges.
The class gave my daughter and me a common space to learn to grow, to focus, to relax, and to improve our approach to stressful situations.

IMCW Retreats and Workshops
IMCW retreats and workshops offer instruction in Buddhist meditation and talks on the awakening of our natural insight, love and wisdom. While the meditation practices derive from the Buddhist tradition, they are universal in orientation and address spiritual themes of concern to all contemplative traditions.
A workshop is not primarily silent (talking may be allowed during breaks and lunch) and may be focused on a special topic, such as applying meditation to relationships, emotional healing or physical well-being. Workshops may include a variety of formats, including different reflections and exercises and the sharing of experiences.

The class fee will be refunded if you register for the 8-Week MBSR Course starting June 25, 2020.
Scholarships are available. To apply, please email the retreat manager before registering. You can also direct a donation to the scholarship fund on the registration form. Please apply early as funds are limited.
