IMCW's Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an eight-week program in the Washington, DC area that assists people who want to learn to use their own internal resources to respond more skillfully to stress, medical and psychological conditions, and promote healthy living.
The classes are modeled after the ones offered at the Stress Reduction Clinic developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. This 30-year-old program is highly respected in the medical community, and has been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show, NBC’s Dateline, ABC’s Evening News, and hundreds of newspapers and magazine articles. In February 2014 it was featured on the cover of Time Magazine.
This course is suitable for both beginning meditators (no meditation experience required) and for experienced meditators looking to deepen their practice and understanding of mindfulness.
The course schedule consists of eight weekly classes and one day-long workshop. This highly participatory, practical course includes:
- Guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practices
- Gentle stretching and mindful yoga
- Group dialogue and discussions aimed at enhancing awareness in everyday life
- Daily home practice, including guided meditations
- Six meditation practice CDs (also available in mp3 format) and a home practice manual

The Zoom link for this series will be sent out the week before the series begins.
Participants are advised to find a location with relatively few distractions, as much as possible. Participants may wish to have a cushion or bench for meditation, or a chair that allows the back to be reasonably upright; a pillow behind the back may be of assistance. There will be some mindful movement and stretching on the floor during the third class; you may wish to have a yoga mat or a blanket available.

I have been able to apply and integrate the learning from the class in my day-to-day life. It has brought a sense of calm, peace, and kindness that gives me the confidence of dealing with life’s challenges.
The class gave my daughter and me a common space to learn to grow, to focus, to relax, and to improve our approach to stressful situations.
