Anapanasati: Using the Breath as a Portal to Awakening Weekend

Trisha Stotler Online Retreat via Zoom

Trisha Stotler

3/19/2021 7:00 PM - 3/21/20212:00 PM  at  Online Retreat via Zoom (Virtual) (Map It)

Friday, March 19 – Sunday, March 21

Friday 7-9 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m., Sunday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

This experiential silent weekend retreat explores the Anapanasati Sutta, one of the few highly detailed discourses, in which the Buddha lays out instructions on how to use mindfulness of breathing to develop a fully awakened heart and mind. Often considered a concentration practice, anapanasati also develops joy and ease, as the mind (and nervous system) gradually let go of habitual patterns of self-protection and clinging.

This retreat is appropriate for anyone dedicated to regular meditation practice. Beginners will benefit from the structure of progression through the 16 steps, while experienced practitioners will deepen their understanding and experience of this practice.

Of this practice, the Buddha said, “Friends, if you practice this anapanasati more and more, it will calm and purify your mind, and you will dwell in a mental state of joy.”

The retreat will begin with gathering together on Friday evening for a welcome and introduction to the Buddha’s anapanasati teaching. We’ll be together in silence all day on Saturday, when we’ll begin the progression of the formal anapanasati practice, along with supportive instructions, talks and movement (including walking). We’ll finish the final tetrad of practice on Sunday, and come out of silence in community before the end of the retreat.

Note: Because this is an online retreat, participants are encouraged to find space of relative quiet, limiting the amount of interaction with others in the environment as much as possible. Participants may join by internet or via phone.

Participants will be given the Zoom link in the registration confirmation email and again via email the week before the course begins.
