During this daylong retreat, we’ll explore the Brahma Viharas, or Divine Abodes – four practices that open and nurture the heart.
In the Buddhist teachings, these four practices – loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity – are considered the highest qualities of heart and emotional wellbeing.
During our time together, we’ll not only begin to sense into these qualities of heart, but practice abiding and dwelling in them as well. Over time, these practices can become our true home, as well as the atmosphere in which we deepen our mindfulness practice and intimacy with life.
We’ll be gathering for our retreat on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m in the peaceful, spacious, modern blue sanctuary of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Shenandoah Valley, 6380 Valley Pike, Stephens City, VA. The quiet church grounds include open spaces and beautiful walking trails in the woods.
The format will includeboth guided and silent meditation, a dharma talk, and walking meditation both inside the sanctuary, and outside on the beautiful grounds. The silence will end at 4 p.m., and we’ll finish with a half-hour dedicated to questions.
Once you’ve registered, you’ll receive more information and suggestions from Shell.
This venue is accessible for those with mobility impairments.
IMCW Retreats and Workshops
IMCW retreats and workshops offer instruction in Buddhist meditation and talks on the awakening of our natural insight, love and wisdom. While the meditation practices derive from the Buddhist tradition, they are universal in orientation and address spiritual themes of concern to all contemplative traditions.
A workshop is not primarily silent (talking may be allowed during breaks and lunch) and may be focused on a special topic, such as applying meditation to relationships, emotional healing or physical well-being. Workshops may include a variety of formats, including different reflections and exercises and the sharing of experiences.
