From Suffering to Freedom: An Exploration of the Four Noble Truths Weeklong Silent Retreat

Sunday, August 23-Sunday, August 30

The Four Noble Truths are the heart of the Buddha’s teaching for moving from suffering toward freedom. These teachings, when cultivated through reflection and meditation, have the capacity to move us into a greater sense of peace, joy, and aliveness. Through dharma talks, group meetings with the teachers, meditation instruction, mindful movement practices, and plenty of personal meditation, you will be guided to a deeper sense of embodying these profound teachings.

Registration is open to MMTCP students and prospective students until April 2020 and then afterwards will be open to the general public.

Note: In keeping with Buddhist tradition, teachers and retreat managers receive no payment from the registration fee, which covers room and board only. Donations offered by the students at the end of retreat support the teachers and retreat managers. Please review the dropdown tab below ("Fees, Scholarships, Cancellations") for more information.

Sevenoaks Retreat Center is located on 120 acres of secluded forest land in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with ample walking trails in the woods and gardens.

The property is expansive, largely wooded, bordered by the Rapidan River, and surrounded by outstanding views of the Blue Ridge mountains. Shamans who have regularly visited Sevenoaks describe the land as “spiritually seasoned.” Simply put, it feels good to be at Sevenoaks.

The featured building is Lighthouse, which offers a spacious, light-filled 52-foot-diameter circular meeting space and meditation hall – with beautiful views and resting spots on the 2nd-story circular porch.

Located in Central Virginia, Sevenoaks is easily accessible by car from large cities and airports, reachable in about 90 minutes from Winchester, less than two hours from Washington D.C., 75 minutes from Richmond, or 30 minutes from Charlottesville.

This venue is not fully accessible for those with mobility impairments.

All rooms are shared occupancy, simple twin beds with 2-4 beds per room.

Meals are served buffet style with local organic produce when available and are lacto-ovo vegetarian with vegan or gluten-free options available on request (please note this on your registration).

Meal clean-up (washing dishes, sweeping), making and stripping beds, and bell-ringing will be required yogi duties.

This retreat is offered as fragrance-free as possible, so please do not bring or use any products with “parfum” or “fragrance” in the ingredients.

Check-in is between 4-6 p.m. (dinner at 6, event starts at 7 p.m.). The event ends at noon, with lunch afterward.

In order to nurture a sense of stillness and deep listening, silence will be maintained throughout the retreat, as we experience a variety of dharma talks, silent and guided meditations, movement and walking meditation on the grounds.
