The IMCW Family Program invites you to join our 6th annual Mid-Atlantic Family Retreat, our favorite event of the year. Gift your family quality time together to relax and reconnect in supportive community amidst the beautiful Shenandoah foothills. The retreat is open to parents, grandparents, and guardians with children age 5 to 19 interested in cultivating deeper presence, joy, resilience, and connection in everyday family life.

Family retreat, SevenoaksBoth beginning and experienced mindfulness practitioners are welcome.  This IMCW family retreat balances engaged activities with free time. There will be time for collective family practice as well as time for parents, teens, tweens, and younger children to break-out into groups and engage with peers. Adults will have opportunities to practice meditation together and engage in facilitated adult discussion. Teens will spend a portion of their time serving as Teen Mindful Leaders (MLs), assisting Senior MLs in leading activities for the younger children. Community service hours are available.

Activities include mindfulness-centered skits, games, songs, art, movement, nature activities, a bonfire, meditation, and dharma-based talks offered by senior teachers. During free time, optional activities may include sports, dancing, crafts, tubing, nature activities, Qi Gong, and parent workshops.

Parent Testimonials:

"This retreat is a rare opportunity to unplug from our tech-saturated lives and connect with what is true in our family relationships... This is one of the few retreats available in the country focused on families with school-age kids.”  ~ The Fagan-Smith family

“Exactly what I needed… remarkably engaging for kids... poetry in motion.”

Sevenoaks Retreat Center is located on 120 acres of secluded forest land in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with ample walking trails in the woods and gardens.

The property is expansive, largely wooded, bordered by the Rapidan River, and surrounded by outstanding views of the Blue Ridge mountains. Shamans who have regularly visited Sevenoaks describe the land as “spiritually seasoned.” Simply put, it feels good to be at Sevenoaks.

The featured building is Lighthouse, which offers a spacious, light-filled 52-foot-diameter circular meeting space and meditation hall – with beautiful views and resting spots on the 2nd-story circular porch.

Sevenoaks offers gourmet dining, with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian menus, and can accommodate most special dietary needs. Whenever possible, the retreat center cooks with fresh ingredients from its organic garden.

Rooms are multiple-occupancy, with 2-7 twin beds and shared bathrooms. There are single room configurations available for families of 2-7 individuals and we will room family members in the same room. Some families will be assigned 2 rooms either next to or very near each other. Please accept whatever room is offered.

Camping with shared bath (towels provided). Tent campers need to provide their own tents, bedding, tarps, rain fly, etc.

Yogi duties during this retreat will be bell-ringing, making and stripping own beds, bussing tables, washing dishes and cleaning the kitchen.

Located in Central Virginia, Sevenoaks is easily accessible by car from large cities and airports, reachable in about 90 minutes from Winchester, less than two hours from Washington D.C., 75 minutes from Richmond, or 30 minutes from Charlottesville.

This venue is not fully accessible for those with mobility impairments.

Please arrive between 4-6 p.m. on Friday, June 26 for check-in, followed by dinner from 6-7 p.m., orientation and the opening ceremony at 7:45 p.m.

The retreat ends on Tuesday, June 30 at 12:30 p.m. followed by lunch.
